You think I dont know what day comes after friday?

Today is Friday. Probably the next thing that you are thinking after reading this is tomorrow is Saturday, and Sunday comes afterward. This is an obvious fact, however the reason that you are probably thinking this is not just because you are dimwitted enough to spend your time thinking of these trivial facts, but because of the new popular song by Rebecca Black titled Friday.

This song is ridiculous, and not in the good way. The lyrics in itself are one of the problems. With lines such as “Gotta have my bowl, gotta have cereal” and “Gotta catch my bus, I see my friends”. The cheesiness of the plot of this song, just makes it hard to listen to. The other problem with this song is that the entire thing is auto-tuned. A lot of times auto-tune creates a cool effect to the song, however in this case it was just to over the top. I am probably not the only one who thinks this either as it has even been slammed on the internet as the worst video in the world, and that it is a parody of today’s pop songs.

There are however the people who think that this is catchy. Students have been singing this song everywhere I go at school, and I have to admit that this song is catchy as it gets stuck in your head. I mean it has become a youtube hit with over 17 million views in just a week, and it is in the top 50 on the itunes shop, so she must be doing something right.

Although the song is catchy I still cant stand to listen to it. To make things worse today is Friday, causing others to repeatedly play the song over and over. I guess music nowadays has definitely changed, but is it for the better?

  1. Music will always change, and I do not think that there is such a thing as bad music. It is the way that people react to music that could potentially be bad, frustrating, etc. Friday is most definitely an annoying song, and I am surprised that the kids singing it in the hallways don't get tired of it themselves...

    But all together, great post!

  2. Not only is this song catchy, it never ceases to entertain me. While obviously Rebecca Black lacks talent in the traditional sense I do enjoy the subtle criticism of suburban culture within the song. However it must be hard to detect with all the hater-ade you've been sipping. Seriously though good post, keep it up.

  3. I feel a bit sorry for all the flak she's been getting, but it is a pretty horrible song. Nevertheless, it does have its certain catchiness. Plus, it's almost impossible to avoid, what with the meme being so popular now.
Did you know that Dec. 12, 2012, falls on a Friday?

  4. I finally listened to this, after many days of ignoring it, despite the hype. It is truly awful. Her voice and diction are both annoying and the extreme autotune is blech.

I did enjoy the Bob Dylan spoof of the song I discovered over at Rough Draft.

  6. I think Rebecca shouldn't have picked Friday, because now I can't think of the word without hearing her voice in my head. It's really unpleasant. The Stephen Colbert cover was amusing though.

  7. It's Firday, Friday, gotta get down on Friday! Well just kidding, it is actually Tuesday (much to your disappoint I'm sure). While I admit that this song is catchy to the point of annoying, and bland to the point of impossibility, don't you think that we're judging Rebecca and her song too harshly? Is there any pop song out there that is not equally dull and unoriginal? Black is only 13 years old, and her label is a small one. Given the updated auto-tuning machine and famous songwriters, I'm sure she would be as great as anyone at becoming a cultural icon.

Give her a break. Nice post.
